Significant 5.3 quake hits near Nanao, Ishikawa, Japan

5.3 quake 16 Sep 6:42 pm (GMT +9)

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Nanao, Ishikawa, Japan, was reported only 12 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13.1 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Thursday, September 16th, 2021, at 6:42 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Nanao (pop. 45,300) located 59 km from the epicenter, Kurobe-shi (pop. 42,600) 68 km away, Himimachi (pop. 54,500) 78 km away, Uozu (pop. 45,800) 79 km away, Takaoka (pop. 170,100) 88 km away, Toyama (pop. 325,500) 90 km away, Jōetsu (pop. 204,100) 91 km away, and Kanazawa (pop. 458,900) 118 km away.
