The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2 km beneath the epicenter near Acapulco, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico, late at night on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022, at 11:35 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Colonia Luces en el Mar (pop. 1,200) located 4 km from the epicenter.
In Los Mogotes (pop. 1,300) located 6 km from the epicenter, El Embarcadero (pop. 1,400) 8 km away, Bajos del Ejido (pop. 6,200) 10 km away, Coyuca de Benitez (pop. 13,600) 13 km away, and Acapulco (pop. 673,500) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tixtlancingo (pop. 3,600) located 19 km from the epicenter, and Kilometro 30 (pop. 6,300) 30 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) located 54 km from the epicenter.
