The volcano continues to erupt and produce large and potentially very dangerous explosions. One just occurred a few hours ago today (28 July), at 13:20 local time, sending an ash column to 4500 m height or approx. 7 km / 20,000 ft altitude.
The plume drifted towards the east and south where ash fall is occurring.
The eruption lasted about 12-13 minutes. In addition to the vertical eruption column, it generated hot avalanches (pyroclastic flows) that traveled down the eastern and southeastern flank for about 1000 m.
The alert level of the volcano remains at 3 ("Siaga", Alert) on the Indonesian scale of 1-4.

The current recommendations of the volcano observatory are:
1. Community and visitors/tourists should not carry out activities in the destroyed or abandoned villages around the southern and eastern slopes of the volcano, including all areas within 3 km from the summit, within 5 km radius on the southern and eastern slopes, and 4 km for the northeastern sector.
2. In case of ash rain, people are advised to wear masks when leaving the house to reduce the health impact of volcanic ash. Securing clean water facilities and cleaning house roofs from heavy volcanic ash so they don't collapse.
3. People who live and live near rivers that originate at Mount Sinabung to remain alert to the dangers of lahars.
