Activity at Soputan has decreased since the strong eruptive episode on October 3. Seismicity has dropped to pre-eruption levels and only minor steaming from the summit crater has been observed. Activity could, however, increase again at any time, and the alert level remains at 3 (on a scale of 1-4).

The volcano erupted this morning at 08:47 local time. The eruption consisted of a sudden large vulcanian explosion which lasted 6 minutes and sent a vertical ash column to approx. 4 km height above the volcano and caused light to moderate ash falls in nearby areas to the W and NW. ...

On 21 April, VSI lowered the alert level from 3 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4), following a decrease in seismic and visible activity from the volcano.
The small Soputan stratovolcano on the southern rim of the Quaternary Tondano caldera on the northern arm of Sulawesi Island is one of Sulawesi's most active volcanoes. The youthful, largely unvegetated volcano rises to 1784 m and is located SW of Sempu volcano. It was constructed at the southern end of a SSW-NNE trending line of vents. During historical time the locus of eruptions has included both the summit crater and Aeseput, a prominent NE-flank vent that formed in 1906 and was the source of intermittent major lava flows until 1924.

: In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred at Anak Krakatau, blasting away a portion of the southern crater rim. A similar event might have been the final trigger for the catastrophic landslide that let the cone collapse and cause a devastating tsunami on 22 Dec 2018.
Climbing Stromboli volcano
: Stromboli provides one of the most remarkable opportunities to watch volcanic eruptions from close: a natural ridge located 150 m above the active vents. A classic and all-time favorite tour by anyone interested in seeing active volcanoes!
: A selection of our most popular trips, which we have been offering and improving over many years now: Stromboli & Etna, Santorini, Java, Ethiopia, Nyiragongo and more. Have a look!
