Etna volcano (Italy), activity update: SE crater paroxysm

Another day full of surprising and exciting activity at Etna is ending: in the morning, the hornito at the 2800 m vent in Valle del Bove started to collapse and spattering, feeding two small, viscous lava overflows.

The flows from the 3050 m vents yesterday evening had stopped. Starting from around 1 pm, strong ash emissins started at SE crater, continuing until 3:30pm. At this time, the ash emissins were replaced by gradually increasing strombolian bursts, that were almost continuous and up to 300m high by 5pm. At around the same time, three more vents opened: one in the saddle between the central crater and the W flank of SE crater, and two at the S flank of BN near the previous locations at 3050 m elevation. All of the vents were spattering, most intensely the upper one at the 3050 m fracture, and feeding lava impressive flows. Activity started to decline from around 8 pm and at the time of writing, dense, black ash is rising vertically from SE crater, with minor strombolian bursts and the lava flows in the process of cooling.
