12:34 PM | AUTEUR : TTo the south in Japan, Sakurajima volcano had a series of larger than average explosion yesterday early afternoon (local time) and early today. VAAC Tokyo reports 4 explosions with ash clouds reaching 2.7-3.5 km altitude within 24 hours.
Activity of Popocatépetl has been stable with relatively few and weak explosions of mostly steam (about 1 per hour). CENAPRED decreased the alert level of Popocatépetl to Yellow Phase 2 yesterday.
Tungurahua volcano has been calming down, with no further explosions, and a decrease in inflation. IG concluded in its latest press release that probably most of the energy in the current eruptive episode has been consumed during the peak phase between 14-21 Aug and estimates that about 0.5 million cubic meters of magma had been erupted. Still, some earthquakes recorded recently could suggest that new magma pulses are on their way.
The other volcanoes at unrest in South America have not shown significant changes in their activity.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory AVO has no evidence of eruptive activity at Cleveland volcano since the last small eruption on 19 August.
Iliamna volcano in Alaska is still on yellow alert, because seismicity is slightly above background. Otherwise, there has not been unusual activity at the volcano recently.
Another seismic swarm is occurring near Krisuvik volcano in SW Iceland following a 3.1 earthquake yesterday.
Batu Tara in the Sunda Islands (Indonesia) continues its daily work to erupt and produce ash clouds observed at 6-7,000 ft altitude.
