Fuego volcano (Guatemala) activity update: weak to moderate explosion, lava flows stopped

Mon, 17 Sep 2012, 10:05
10:05 AM | BY: T
INSIVUMEH reports weak and some moderate explosions with fine ash plumes rising to 400 to 800 meters, moving at 8 km west, and creating light ash fall in the areas of Sangre de Christo, Panimache I and II to the west. The explosions were sometimes accompanied by rumbling sounds. The lava flows have now disappeared.

Activity remains at normal levels with sporadic weak to moderate explosions with ash rising 400-800 meters and some rumbling sounds. The lava flow to the Taniluya canyon has apparently decreased a lot, as INSIVUMEH reported it to be only 50 m long yesterday. ... read all

In the course of the night there were 7 explosions, 4 weak and 3 moderate expelling fine ash at 500 and 800 meters above the crater. The stronger explosions were accompanied by rumbling noises and created plumes that drifted 7 km to the west and SW where fine ash fall occurred in the Sangre Cristo area. read all

The eruption of the volcano has undergone a change from explosive to mainly effusive over the past few hours, INSIVUMEH reports in the latest bulletin last night (22h00 local time). Instead of a large sustained ash column, there are now smaller pulsating ash emissions reaching 3-700 m height, but instead the volcano is producing large (for Fuego) lava flows between 900 and 1,000 meters long and 150 wide. The different activity is also leaving a different type of seismic signature and has remained stable over the past hours. ... read all
