The number and average size of explosions at the volcano have increased again since Wednesday. INSIVUMEH reported frequent explosions with shock waves and ash plumes of up to 1 km height. No lava flow is currently active.

The volcano is in mild to moderate strombolian activity with a few explosions on average per hour. Incandescent material is being ejected to 100 m above the crater and ash plumes rise up to 800 m. ...more

INSIVUMEH reported that an effusive eruption at Fuego that began on 28 February produced 300-400-m-high lava fountains. One lava flow traveled 1.6 km S down the Trinidad drainage and another traveled 600 m W down the Santa Teresa drainage. The eruption produced rumbling and train sounds audible up to 12 km away. Ash plumes rose 850-1,250 m above the crater and drifted 35 km W. ...more

A new paroxysm, a drastically stronger phase of activity, began at the volcano yesterday, characterized by increased strombolian-type explosions, effusion of lava flows and moderate to large pyroclastic flows that traveled to the southeastern side threatening the road between Antigua and Escuintla. ...more

Ring-shaped (giant smoke ring?) eruption cloud from Fuego today
Activity has been at the higher end of the scale recently. Strong explosions occur frequently, ejecting plumes that reach 1-1.3 km height and causing constant avalanches on the volcano's upper slopes, often causing bush fires in the vegetation below. ...more
