Fuego volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Activity has calmed down a bit again. INSIVUMEH reported 18 explosions (10 weak and 8 moderate) with ash plumes reaching 600-1200 m above the crater and drifting S and SE.

The lava flow that emerged on 19 March had split into two lobes towards the Ceniza and Taniluya canyons and advanced to a total length of 1500 m. It was still weakly active this morning and had produced weak to moderate avalanches.

The volcano has been calmer today, with only 10 mostly weak strombolian explosions registered, and maximum ash plume heights of 600 m. Incandescent tephra was seen ejected to 100 m above the crater and rolling down towards the Ceniza canyon. Strong degassing with turbine-like noises lasting up to 3 minutes were heard. [more]

Compared to the previous days, activity has a bit decreased. INSIVUMEH reports few weak to moderate explosions, and small glowing avalanches from the crater towards the Ceniza drainage visible at night. A new lava flow is predicted to re-appear in the coming days. ... [more]
