Fuego volcano (Guatemala): increase of activity, new lava flows

Fuego volcano yesterday (?) (image via MAXIMO NIVEL @maximoabroad / twitter)Another phase of strong increased activity (paroxysm) has started at the volcano yesterday. The volcano observatory reports that explosions have become more intense and frequent, 4-6 per hour, on the evening of 14 Dec.
Ash plumes rose up to 1 km and loud shock waves accompanied many of them. Two new lava flows, 800 m long, have started to head towards the Santa Teresa (west flank) and Trinidad (south flank) drainages.
This would be the 13th paroxysmal episode during 2015, and if activity increases further, dangerous pyroclastic flows are likely to occur in the coming hours / days. In particular, river beds and valleys at the feet of the mountain should be avoided at all times, as these are high-risk areas.

Fuego volcano (Guatemala): strong eruptive phase with lava flows over 2 km length, risk of pyroclastic flows

The activity at the volcano has been increasing since a few days ago. The effusion rate has risen significantly. Pulsating lava fountaining and strong, detonating strombolian explosions several hundred meters high from the summit vents are currently feeding at least 3 relatively large lava flows descending on the western and southern flanks: ... Another paroxysm - a peak in activity with lava fountains and lava flows - occurred at the volcano last night, the 10th such event this year. It seems that activity with increasing effusion rate began during the night Sunday-Monday, as the volcano observatory reported a new lava flow on the southern flank the next morning. It was headed towards the Las Lajas and El Jute drainages and had reached 1500 m length by Monday morning. ... [more]
