Fuego volcano (Guatemala): increasing activity

Monday Jan 09, 2017 16:09 PM | BY: T

Heat signal from Fuego volcano (MIROVA)
Heat signal from Fuego volcano (MIROVA)
Activity at the volcano is increasing again and the volcano might be heading towards another paroxysm.
INSIVUMEH's volcano observatory reported an average of 10 strombolian-type explosions per hour, with incandescent jets reaching approx. 120 m and ash plumes that rise up to 1000 m and drift 10 km before dissipating.
Unfortunately, both webcams pointed towards Fuego are at the moment offline, but the thermal signal is strong and shows a clear trend towards increasing activity. There was no mention of a lava flow in the latest report from the observatory.
