1997 fatalities
3 soldiers were killed by CO2 on 12 July 1997 on a training mission at the N foot of Hakkoda volcano. They had entered a depression filled by lethal concentrations of volcanogenic CO2. "In the darkness, some members of the party slipped into a depression (18 m long, 11 m wide, and 8 m deep), as did those who first tried to rescue them. The men were hospitalized on the evening of 12 July, but three lost their lives."(Smithsonian / GVP monthly reports)
