Thermal satellite images of Heard Island?s Big Ben volcano showed thermal anomalies of varying intensity over the summit area or on the NW and W flanks on 4, 11, 14, and 21 November. Weather clouds prevented views of the volcano on eight other acquisitions during the month. On 11 November four anomalies on the NW flank formed a ?v? shape open to the NW, possibly indicating a branched lava flow.
On 21 November the anomaly was on the W flank and possible emissions from the E and SE margins of it drifted SE.

The recent activity (unknown in its exact nature) seems to have either ended or significantly decreased. The thermal signal which had been strong in July and suggested the presence of active lava gradually decreased during August and Sep (s. image). Read all

It seems very likely that a new eruption has been taking place at the remote volcano: since mid June, and in particular during the second half of July, a moderate to strong thermal anomaly has been present at the volcano's summit. Read all

Heard Island volcano (Australia): likely new lava flow from summit

Weak effusive activity continues from the volcano and seems to have picked up during the past days. Recent satellite imagery revealed an elongated source of heat emission on the upper NW flank, which likely corresponds to a new small lava flow approx. 500 m long that occurred as result of overflow from the crater.
