MODIS hot spots on Heard volcano during the past 7 days (MODIS / Univ. Hawai'i)
A thermal hot spot remains visible at the volcano.
Fri, 21 Dec 2012, 11:05
Activity probably continues at the summit of the island (Mawson Peak). MODVOLC found a new hot spot yesterday on satellite data. Unfortunately, the weather in the area is usually bad and dense cloud cover prevents to see the island from space.

MODIS data showing the hot spot at Heard volcano (summarized past 7 days, Univ. Hawaii)
A new thermal anomaly localized at Mawson Peak, the volcano's main summit dome, was detected yesterday by MODVOLC. Thermal anomalies have been occasionally been detectable since September when the often dense cloud cover did not prevent it. It is likely that some minor eruptive activity is going on at the volcano.

October 13 image of Heard Island, showing the dark summit crater
A NASA satellite image of Heard Island on October 13th shows Heard covered in a white ice sheet. The summit crater was unusually dark, with a possible lava flow in its crater. Strong heat signatures were detected in its crater. Read more... read all

MODIS hotspots at Heard Island during 17-24 Sep 2012 (Univ. of Hawai'i)
MODIS satellite data showed hotspots at Heard Island volcano on 21 and 24 September 2012. This suggests that there was or perhaps still is some new activity at the volcano. Read more...
