Heard Island volcano (Australia): likely new eruption since June 2018

Heat radiation from Heard Island during the past months (image: Mirova)
It seems very likely that a new eruption has been taking place at the remote volcano: since mid June, and in particular during the second half of July, a moderate to strong thermal anomaly has been present at the volcano's summit.
The nature of this activity is unknown: it could be from strombolian activity, a small lava lake, and / or new lava flows (although a quick browse through satellite images did not show dark spots that would be expected in case of lava flows).

Weak effusive activity continues from the volcano and seems to have picked up during the past days. Recent satellite imagery revealed an elongated source of heat emission on the upper NW flank, which likely corresponds to a new small lava flow approx. 500 m long that occurred as result of overflow from the crater. ...

A plume from Heard was visible in a satellite image drifting SSW on 30 October, the Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report 28 October-3 November 2015 mentioned. This suggests some sort of activity still going on from the remote volcano in the Kerguelen Islands.

: In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred at Anak Krakatau, blasting away a portion of the southern crater rim. A similar event might have been the final trigger for the catastrophic landslide that let the cone collapse and cause a devastating tsunami on 22 Dec 2018.
