Volcano Calendar 2018: We're proud to present our 2018 volcano calendar: 13 different and attractive images of volcanoes, volcanic landscapes and phenomena taken during volcano tours over the past few years.
The Volcano Adventure Guide: Excellent information and background for anyone wishing to visit active volcanoes safely and enjoyably. The book presents guidelines to visiting 42 different volcanoes around the world.
Cerro Hudson volcano in southern Chile is the southernmost active volcano of the Chilean Southern Volcanic Zone caused by subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate.
The massive Hudson volcano contains a 10 km wide, almost circular ice-filled caldera, which drains into the Huemules glacier to the north. Mudflows have been generated from this glacier down into the Río de Los Huemeles.
2 cinder cones are located north of the volcano. Other flank cones are found on the SW and SE flanks.
The remote volcano was not recognized as such until its first 20th-century eruption in 1971. An eruption in 1991 was Chile's second largest of the 20th century. It formed a new 800-m-wide crater in the SW part of the caldera.
Seismic activity under the volcano has recently shown a mild increase, triggering Chile's SERNAGEOMIN to raise the volcanic alert level to "yellow". ...more
The frequency of volcanic quakes increased from less than 10 during each of August and September to 26 in October and 70 in November. In the latter month, phases of tremor and so-called hybrid earthquakes - both thought to represent magma movements at depth - also occurred. The source of the quakes seems to be the same or similar to the 2011 eruption. No other significant signs of volcanic unrest (such as increased degassing, surface temperature etc) have been detected suggesting that an eruption (if at all) is not likely to come very soon. [less]

An eruption has started at Cerro Hudson volcano in Chile. The activity comes from a new eruptive fissure located south of the summit with 3 vents that emit clouds of steam and some ash, rising to 5.5 km elevation. ...more
The authorities are distributing face masks to the population to protect from breathing ash. So far, 128 persons are reported evacuated, while 4 persons refused to leave their homes. More evacuations in a radius of 45 km around the volcano are planned, and the highest alert has been declared for the communities of Aysén, Río Ibáñez and Chile Chico and the Región de Aysén region. Compared to previous days, seismicity has decreased, Enrique Valdivieso, the director of SERNAGEOMIN told the El Diario de Aysen newspaper. A major concern remains the threat of lahars (mud flows), likely to affect the Río Sorpresa valley. [less]
Another volcano in Southern Chile, Mt Hudson in the Aysén region, could be close to a new eruption. Starting on Tuesday, over 100 earthquakes have been detected under the volcano by the National Institute of Geology (SERNAGEOMIN), who raised the alert level to Red ("eruption could be imminent"). ...more
The Chilean government has already evacuated over 100 residents living within 25 miles of the Hudson volcano. Eruptions of Hudson volcano are typically highly explosive and although the area is sparsely populated, pose a serious risk of pyroclastic flows, ash falls, and mud flows generated by melting of the ice and snow present on the slopes of the massive volcano. The last eruption in 1991 was Chile's second largest in the 20th century. [less]
Ijen volcano photos: Ijen volcano in East Java is famous for its turquoise acid crater lake and the large sulfur deposits that are being mined by local workers. At night, the scene is illuminated by ghostly blue flames, as sulfur ignites.
