Minor submarine eruptions were reported at two locations on January 15, 1854, when the ship "Susquehannah" passed the southern tip of Taiwan. Little is known about volcanism in this area, although the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World (Kuno, 1962) and Liu (1986, pers. comm.) mentioned an 1854 eruption here, based on accounts in Sapper (1917). Liu listed a depth of 115 m for this volcano. Both the nature of the reported eruptive phenomena and its location are uncertain due to the lack of sufficent detail in the original report.
