Just 16 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the village of Shirahama, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday 13 November 2020 at 4.31 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Shirahama (pop. 300) located 90 km from the epicenter, Yonakuni (pop. 1,700) 103 km away, Ishigaki (pop. 44,800) 104 km away, and Hirara (pop. 34,400) 170 km away.
