Light magnitude 4.8 quake hits 110 km southwest of Arawa, Papua New Guinea in the morning

Just 20 minutes ago, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 10:34 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 70 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arawa (pop. 40,300) located 110 km from the epicenter.
