Light magnitude 4.6 quake hits 8 km southwest of Papanoa, Mexico early afternoon

A moderately shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Papanoa, Técpan de Galeana, Guerrero, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Monday 18 January 2021 at 2:58 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 39 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rayo Verde (pop. 80) located 7 km from the epicenter, Papanoa (pop. 3,500) 8 km away, Coyuquilla Norte (pop. 1,500) 13 km away, San Luis San Pedro (pop. 4,200) 22 km away, Petatlan (pop. 21,700) 35 km away, San Jeronimito (pop. 6,800) 43 km away, and Técpan de Galeana (pop. 15,100) 49 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo (pop. 67,400) located 64 km from the epicenter, and Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) 70 km away.
