Light 4.4 quake hits near Karlovasi, Samos, North Aegean, Greece

Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Karlovasi, Samos, North Aegean, Greece. The tremor was recorded early morning on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 1:37 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Agios Nikolaos (pop. 26) located 5 km from the epicenter, Karlovasi (pop. 6,700) 8 km away, and Kokkari (pop. 1,100) 14 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Marathokampos (pop. 1,100) located 15 km from the epicenter, Mytilinioi (pop. 2,000) 19 km away, Samos (pop. 1,900) 22 km away, Vathy (pop. 1,900) 23 km away, and Kusadasi (pop. 63,200) 44 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chios (pop. 24,000) located 79 km from the epicenter.
