Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 77 km northwest of Wellington, New Zealand early afternoon

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Picton (pop. 3,000) located 39 km from the epicenter, Blenheim (pop. 26,600) 64 km away, Porirua (pop. 50,900) 76 km away, Khandallah (pop. 8,500) 77 km away, and Wellington (pop. 381,900) 77 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) located 85 km from the epicenter, Paraparaumu (pop. 25,300) 87 km away, and Upper Hutt (pop. 38,400) 93 km away.
