Significant magnitude 6.7 earthquake 45 km southeast of Ishinomaki, Japan

Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 6.9, the United States Geological Survey at magnitude 6.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) located 45 km from the epicenter, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 52 km away, Shiogama (pop. 59,500) 62 km away, Rifu (pop. 35,000) 67 km away, Iwanuma (pop. 42,400) 76 km away, Tomiya (pop. 42,500) 77 km away, Furukawa (pop. 76,300) 80 km away, and Ichinoseki (pop. 63,000) 97 km away.
