The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Rwanda near Gisenyi, Western Province, 30 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Tuesday 25 May 2021 at 11:03 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Gisenyi (pop. 83,600) located 20 km from the epicenter, and Goma (pop. 144,100) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ruhengeri (pop. 86,700) located 28 km from the epicenter, Sake (pop. 17,200) 40 km away, Gitarama (pop. 87,600) 66 km away, and Kigali (pop. 745,300) 83 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nzega (pop. 33,800) located 99 km from the epicenter, and Butare (pop. 89,600) 117 km away.
