Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Poso, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Poso, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, was reported only 10 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Thursday, September 16th, 2021, at 3:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Poso (pop. 47,100) located 34 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palu (pop. 282,400) located 83 km from the epicenter.
