Read more...An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 had been recorded by the Department of Natural Resources Canada on 17 February 2021. The epicenter was located 370 km off the coast of British Colombia, Canada, at about 10 km depth, very near to the mid-oceanic ridge underneath the Pacific Ocean. Its location suggests that the phenomenon known as a sea-floor spreading might have caused the quake. Read more...The earthquakes epicenter was actually in nearby Tajikistan, yet this relatively deep earthquake at an intermediate 86 km below the surface caused it to be felt as far as New Delhi in India, over 1100 km away, and even further than Bhopal in Central India, some 1600 km away. Both the Indian and Pakistani sides of Kashmir got shaken significantly, with a huge number of comments coming in to VolcanoDiscovery describing the shaking and panic of people fleeing outdoors. People from Indian cities such as Amritsar, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Gujrat, Gurdaspur, Jaipur, Jammu, Noida, Sopore and Srinagar all reported shaking. The strongest quakes were widely felt by people living on the southern slopes of Etna. Most users classified the intensity as a 3 or 4 on the 12-point Modified Mercalli Scale, considered the most common intensity scale used in seismology. Read more...Reports have come in from all over the city and its surroundings, including Nob Hill, Muir Beach, Sausalito, Castro, San Rafael, Mill valley, Tiburon, Twin Peaks, Napa, Tam Valley, Alameda, Fairfax, Novato, Oakhill, Berkeley, Larkspur and many other areas. Many users described the sensation as garbage trucks passing in front of their homes, often accompanied by a strong bump or a boom. Some thought it was an explosion, while others reported a single big jolt. There were also reports of objects rattling but no serious damage so far. Interestingly, several online reports we received noted how dogs and cats reacted to the quake, even before it was felt by their human owners. [ meno] leggere tuttiWed, 30 Dec 2020, 11:33 ![]() Epicenter area of today's devastating earthquake in Croatia A massive earthquake of 6.4 on the Richter scale hit central Croatia near the town of Petrinja at 12.19 local time (GMT +1) which was felt to different degrees in several countries, including Bosnia/Herzegovina, Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and Austria. Read more...Numerous reports are coming into the VolcanoDiscovery earthquake monitoring service from several countries mentioned above. Our users in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, reported alarm, with objects falling on them and people screaming. People across Croatia perceived different durations, anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 full minute (a very long time in earthquake terms). Most of Zagreb has suffered from power outages and hospitals have been evacuated. According to local news website INDEXHR the police have called on people to close their gas mains and limit the use of private vehicles. Images from the quake show debris in the streets from buildings, traffic jams and tram cars that have stopped due to electricity cuts. There are reports of deaths in Petrinja close to the earthquake’s epicenter, along with reports of general panic among the town’s inhabitants and many collapsed structures in the area. In neighboring Slovenia, authorities have even shut down the Krsko nuclear power plant.
