Update Wed, 21 Oct 2020, 07:08
Light earthquake of magnitude 4.1 just reported 95 km SW of Ierápetra, Greece
A magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported only 20 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 km (8.7 miles) beneath the epicenter in the morning on 21 October at 9.48 am local time. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth could be revised within the next few minutes as the agency updates and refines its calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery also identified a second report from the KOERI-RETMC agency which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.1.
Towns and cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Pýrgos (pop. 1,100) in 83 km (52 miles) distance with very weak shaking expected, Arvi (pop. 700) in 84 km (52 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected, Moíres (pop. 6,400) in 94 km (58 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected, Ierápetra (pop. 12,400) in 95 km (59 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected.
