Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Papua New Guinea near the town of Kainantu only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake shook early morning on Monday 2 November 2020 at 2.24 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 64 km. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Kainantu (pop. 8,500) at a distance of 21 km with weak shaking, Goroka (pop. 18,500) at a distance of 79 km with weak shaking, Lae (pop. 76,300) at a distance of 111 km with weak shaking, and Bulolo (pop. 16,000) at a distance of 114 km with weak shaking.
