A very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near the town of Pedernales, Ecuador.
According to the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the quake hit on Thursday 5 November 2020 at 4.47 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The magnitude, exact location of the epicenter, and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pedernales (pop. 6,000) located 27 km from the epicenter, Muisne (pop. 13,400) 41 km away, and Rosa Zarate (pop. 42,100) 48 km away.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Esmeraldas (pop. 165,200) located 82 km from the epicenter, and Santo Domingo de los Colorados (pop. 200,400) 99 km away.
