A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Nayoro, Nayoro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan, was reported only 12 minutes ago by NIED, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 247.1 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Saturday 19 December 2020 at 6:57 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Nayoro (pop. 26,500, 19 km away), Asahikawa (pop. 356,600, 62 km away), Rumoi (pop. 26,500, 63 km away), Kamikawa (pop. 5,300, 68 km away), Fukagawa (pop. 26,200, 69 km away), Takikawa (pop. 45,100, 89 km away), Mombetsu (pop. 26,900, 89 km away), and Ashibetsu (pop. 19,100, 90 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
