An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred early morning on Wednesday 6 January 2021 at 6:02 am local time near Grębocice, Polkowice County, Lower Silesia, Poland, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Grębocice (pop. 1,500) located 3 km from the epicenter, Głogow (pop. 68,500) 9 km away, Polkowice (pop. 21,600) 10 km away, Żukowice (pop. 910) 14 km away, Lubin (pop. 77,500) 22 km away, Przemkow (pop. 6,500) 24 km away, Chocianow (pop. 8,200) 25 km away, and Gora (pop. 12,700) 29 km away.
