An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early evening on Saturday 9 January 2021 at 7:51 pm local time near Dharamshala, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dharamshala (pop. 19,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, Yol (pop. 11,300) 19 km away, Kangra (pop. 9,200) 25 km away, Chamba (pop. 21,500) 32 km away, and Nagrota (pop. 6,100) 34 km away.

Dhauladha Colony Lower Barol Dari, Dharamsala, at / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / single vertical bump / 1-2 s : It was inspected. We were having dinner and all of sudden we felt a bump lasting 2 sec but it was strong. Windows were shattering during earthquake. We went out of house immediately. We also saw that none from other house had come out.3-4 ricter scale Appx. | One user found this interesting.
