A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Mawlaik, Mawlaik District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), was reported only 18 minutes ago by TMD, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday 17 January 2021 at 2:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) located 53 km from the epicenter, Falam (pop. 5,400) 64 km away, Hakha (pop. 20,000) 94 km away, and Churāchāndpur (pop. 47,800) 103 km away.
