An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 21 minutes ago 22 km west of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9 km beneath the epicenter near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, Mexico, early morning on Tuesday 19 January 2021 at 6:12 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In La Barra de Manialtepec (pop. 20) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) located 22 km from the epicenter, Santiago Cuixtla (pop. 1,300) 25 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 26 km away, Cerro del Aire (pop. 1,500) 29 km away, Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 31 km away, San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) 34 km away, Santiago Yaitepec (pop. 4,100) 41 km away, and Santa Catarina Juquila (pop. 5,300) 42 km away.
