A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Rudna, Lubin County, Lower Silesia, Poland.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 6:10 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rudna (pop. 1,600) located 2 km from the epicenter, Grębocice (pop. 1,500) 10 km away, Polkowice (pop. 21,600) 13 km away, and Lubin (pop. 77,500) 15 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ścinawa (pop. 5,900) located 18 km from the epicenter, Głogow (pop. 68,500) 19 km away, Legnica (pop. 106,000) 36 km away, and Leszno (pop. 63,600) 41 km away. In Breslavia (pop. 634,900, 72 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
