Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Usulutan, Departamento de Usulutan, El Salvador. The tremor was recorded late at night on Friday 29 January 2021 at 11:35 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 32 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Intipuca (pop. 3,500) located 77 km from the epicenter, Puerto El Triunfo (pop. 19,100) 93 km away, Usulutan (pop. 51,900) 96 km away, San Rafael Oriente (pop. 19,100) 97 km away, La Union (pop. 26,800) 99 km away, and San Miguel (pop. 161,900) 107 km away.
