Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 just reported 34 km north of Daet, Philippines
4.9 quake 5 Feb 6:00 am (GMT +8)
4.9 quake 5 Feb 6:00 am (GMT +8)
A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Daet, Camarines Norte, Bicol, Philippines.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday 5 February 2021 at 6:00 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Paracale (pop. 8,300) located 27 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Labo (pop. 18,100) located 34 km from the epicenter, Daet (pop. 78,100) 34 km away, Mercedes (pop. 17,000) 35 km away, Jose Pañganiban (pop. 21,200) 35 km away, Calabanga (pop. 26,800) 83 km away, Naga (pop. 174,900) 91 km away, and Lopez (pop. 25,800) 99 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
