A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Milford Sound, Southland District, Southland, New Zealand, was reported only 7 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday 28 February 2021 at 3:41 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Milford Sound (pop. 440) located 24 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Te Anau (pop. 2,100) located 92 km from the epicenter, and Queenstown (pop. 10,400) 94 km away.
