An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early evening on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 7:10 pm local time near Madang, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 113.2 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kainantu (pop. 8,500) located 84 km from the epicenter, and Madang (pop. 27,400) 97 km away.
