Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Karpathos, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Thursday 1 April 2021 at 3:33 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Olymbos (pop. 400) located 28 km from the epicenter, and Karpathos (pop. 2,200) 54 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kéfalos (pop. 2,500) located 85 km from the epicenter, Antimacheia (pop. 2,300) 91 km away, Archangelos (pop. 5,400) 92 km away, Afantou (pop. 5,600) 99 km away, Zipari (pop. 2,700) 99 km away, Kos (pop. 19,200) 102 km away, and Rhodes (pop. 56,100) 110 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
