A magnitude 3.7 earthquake near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3.7 miles beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday 3 April 2021 at 11:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 3 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) located 20 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 23 miles away, Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) 27 miles away, Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 39 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 43 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 44 miles away. In Kalaoa (pop. 9,600, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
