An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred in the morning on Saturday 3 April 2021 at 11:15 am local time near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 0.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) located 20 miles from the epicenter, and Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 24 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) located 28 miles from the epicenter, Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) 32 miles away, Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 39 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 43 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 44 miles away.
