Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in Japan near Ise, Ise-shi, Mie, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Friday 16 April 2021 at 12:30 am local time at a great depth of 398.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ise (pop. 97,300, 12 km away), Toba (pop. 23,300, 17 km away), Hisai-motomachi (pop. 41,600, 40 km away), Tsu (pop. 163,500, 44 km away), Suzuka (pop. 191,500, 58 km away), Nabari (pop. 88,100, 64 km away), Yokkaichi (pop. 295,800, 67 km away), and Ueno-ebisumachi (pop. 61,600, 68 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
