3.0 quake 12 May 3:14 am (GMT -7)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred early morning on Wednesday 12 May 2021 at 3:14 am local time near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Squirrel Mountain Valley (pop. 550) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 9 miles away, and Weldon (pop. 2,600) 12 miles away. In Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000, 18 miles away), Arvin (pop. 20,900, 32 miles away), Oildale (pop. 32,700, 36 miles away), Bakersfield (pop. 373,600, 37 miles away), and Ridgecrest (pop. 28,800, 41 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
