An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred around noon on Thursday 27 May 2021 at 1:29 pm local time near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, Mexico, as reported by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Las Tres Palmas (pop. 260) located 2 km from the epicenter, Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 8 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 14 km away, San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) 23 km away, and Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 23 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) located 33 km from the epicenter, Santa Catarina Juquila (pop. 6,200) 41 km away, and Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) 76 km away.
