A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, Mexico, was reported only 29 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday 1 June 2021 at 8:39 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Tona Chacalapa (pop. 70) located 3 km from the epicenter, La Luz (pop. 2,400) 7 km away, Santa Rosa de Lima (pop. 2,200) 11 km away, Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) 15 km away, San Miguel Panixtlahuaca (pop. 5,700) 23 km away, and Santiago (pop. 10,100) 37 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) located 55 km from the epicenter, and Pinotepa Nacional (pop. 29,600) 61 km away.
