The Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Ecuador near Jipijapa, Cantón Jipijapa, Provincia de Manabi, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Wednesday 16 June 2021 at 12:55 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) located 49 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Montecristi (pop. 18,400) located 63 km from the epicenter, Manta Ecuador (pop. 183,200) 67 km away, Sucre (pop. 15,300) 68 km away, Salinas (pop. 43,900) 80 km away, La Libertad (pop. 75,900) 82 km away, Santa Elena (pop. 42,200) 82 km away, and Pedro Carbo (pop. 23,400) 91 km away.
