5.1 quake 21 Jun 9:25 pm (GMT -5)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Mexico near Mapastepec, Chiapas, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Monday 21 June 2021 at 9:25 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Jiquilpan (pop. 540) located 3 km from the epicenter.
In Mapastepec (pop. 17,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, and Escuintla (pop. 9,600) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Huixtla (pop. 32,000) located 45 km from the epicenter, Pijijiapan (pop. 16,900) 56 km away, San Francisco Motozintla (pop. 23,800) 63 km away, Tapachula (pop. 202,700) 78 km away, and Comalapa (pop. 18,700) 82 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
