New SE crater paroxysm #5 on 23 February 2013
The 5th paroxysm occurred 2 days after the preceding one and was exceptionally violent, with very tall lava fountains from the New SE crater.Within the series of the 5 paroxysms between 19-23 February 2013, this one has been by far the most violent so far. Strong wind from the south carried cm-sized lapilli as far north as the city of Messina. This is a distance of about 50 kilometres! Pizzi Deneri, 3 kilometres north of the vent, became incandescent from massive amounts of volcanic fallout, making the view spectacular and unforgettable.
