Sfondo
Irruputuncu is the youngest and most southerly of a NE-SW-trending chain of volcanoes. It was was constructed within the collapse scarp left by a debris avalanche which removed part of the SW flank less than 10,000 years ago.Later eruptions have filled much of this scarp and produced thick, viscous lava flows on the western flank.
1995 eruption
A small phreatic eruption occurred on 26 November 1995 and ejected dark ash plumes above the summit. This was the first confirmed historic activity of Irruputuncu volcano.
